Bellaniwilla Rajamaha Viharaya
Bellaniwilla Rajamaha Viharaya – Boralesgamuwa ~
For those who appreciate art and the beauty in its storytelling, find your sanctuary here, in one of the most revered Buddhist temples of Sri Lanka. Come here to pacify your mind, and you never know, you might just find your path to inner peace. This sacred place was abandoned after the Portuguese invasion of the country's coastal areas and later, rediscovered by a wandering monk. He spotted a Bodhi Tree here and identified it as one of the thirty-two saplings from the sacred Bodhi-tree, which was planted in the 3rd century BC, at Anuradhapura. Later, with the help of the villagers , the land around the tree was cleared, and a modest shelter was built to be shared amongst monks. This humble abode of monks is today adorned with beautiful murals painted by artist Somabandu Vidyapathy. Spread across 4632 sq. ft. of walls, these paintings depict Buddha’s life and his teachings. So, come here for some peace and enlightenment, and leave with an additional perspective on ‘Revival of Ancient Culture’.
