Co-existence of peace and wilderness reaches its heights at the Situlpawwa Rock Temple in the middle of the Yala National Park. Built in the second century BC, it boasts of a rich history of over 2,200 years.
The temple gets its name from ‘Chittalapabbata’, which translates to ‘the hill of the quiet mind’. It is believed to have housed over 12,000 ‘arhats’ or Buddhist monks in the ancient times, who attained the highest level of peace.
The temple houses an intricate complex with caves, ‘dagobas’, chapter houses and ponds. The caves depict the rare, prominent murals dating back to the Anuradhapura period. A walk around this temple with our naturalist infuses a sense of calmness in the middle of wilderness.
